Like many readers, browsing Jalopnik regularly over the years, I naturally became inclined towards manual diesel hatchbacks, wagons, and utilitarian body-on-frame 4x4s, obviously. During a recent trip to India, I was in manual diesel heaven. SUVs are especially very popular in India and for good reason. It’s a very rough place to drive, be it in the city with patchy alleyways full of pot holes and speed bumps or the countryside with dirt roads. Of course, ALL of them were manual diesels.

Below is a guide to new Indian SUVs you can buy right now in India. Keep in mind that all of these were designed to be relatively simple to work on, because in India the fancy, smancy garages we are used to in the West are apparently rare in most places over there and back alley repair work is very cheap. I’ve omitted a few Indian crossovers. Much of the information was compiled from carwale.com and cardekho.com, both of which are great sites to research new cars in India.

So is the Thar a rip-off or is it license produced?

Even though these are knockoffs of other designs, I still really want one.

This one’s neat. Called the Force Motors Trax Cruiser, looks like a Defender, and can be configured to seat up to 11 people. Overlanding, anyone? http://www.forcemotors.com/vehicle/index/…

Apparently these were licensed under the Willys Jeep in the old days.

Can we import these? Because that would be awesome.

Yeah, we probably can’t. But it would be fun.

I know Mahindras of yore were, but if this new one is too, that means that there is a place in this world whete you can buy a brand new CJ for barely more than a decent condition original.

Yeah, you’d have to wait till its 25 years old under the current US FMVSS. 15 years for Canada.
